Chapter 14

Mark and Deidre jogged all the way to the bank robbers' house and surveyed it as much as they could while running by it. It was still light out so it was difficult to tell if anyone was home. Then a neighbor’s dog began to bark and Deidre raised her hand to her heart. “Scared me for a second.” Then she saw another sight.

A copper-colored pickup truck driving at the end of the street where they’d turn left. A copper-colored pickup that belonged to Scotty McKnight.

Deidre was sure Mark hadn’t seen it. Even if he had, he wouldn’t have realized who was driving it. Right now wasn’t the time to get into a confrontation with the bully either. They had much bigger fish to fry.

“Listen, Deidre.” Mark glanced at her while they continued their slow-paced jog. “I know you’re going to wear the Girl Scout uniform and try to get close to these people.”

Deidre turned to face Scotty’s truck, but he’d driven off, to her relief.

“I know you won’t listen to me, so I’m going with you,” Mark added.

A lopsided smile partially formed in amusement. “I knew I could count on you.”

“I’m not doing this because I think it’s safe or right. But you’re trying to help my uncle, and I can’t let you get hurt.”

Taking a deep breath, she was glad he’d help her to keep her safe. She wiped a trickle of perspiration from her temple, surprised she’d worked up that much of a sweat.

Mark frowned at her. “What are you seeing?”

She chuckled. “Just wiping away a dribble of sweat. You’re way too suspicious.”

He relaxed his posture while their running shoes pounded the pavement. “Well, it’s hard to tell about you. You have to tell me about these things, but sometimes you don’t seem to want to.”

“Then you’re under strict orders to squeal to my brother.”

He grinned when they ran to her house. “I never squeal. And besides, I think with too many of us laying siege to the place, the bad guys would soon notice us. So it’s just you and me.”

Just the two of them. That sounded really nice. “Yeah, well I thought I was going to have to ask my Auntie Mae to help me. Can you imagine what a disaster that could have been?”

He laughed. “Who knows? She might have gotten one of them to date her. I couldn’t believe she got a date with my uncle so fast. He’s usually pretty cautious with women.”

“Got burned?”

“Two divorces.”

Poor guy. Two bad marriages and prison for trying to save people’s lives. And now he was getting mixed up with her crazy aunt. “Ah. Maybe it’s just a business date… so they can discuss more about her book.” She hoped. Then a horrible thought occurred to her. What if her aunt and David really hit it off great and she moved from Arizona permanently to live here? Argh. That would mean she’d have to see her aunt lots more than once in a blue moon.

“Yeah, maybe it’s just business.
